Avian Influenza is an Animal Health Issue, not a Human Health Issue
Date: December 18, 2014
So, you may have heard about the recent avian influenza outbreak in British Columbia – and you may be concerned. Here are some answers to some questions we have heard from you:
- Chicken is safe to eat; use the same care with your poultry products as you always have.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) states that there is no evidence that consuming poultry or eggs can transmit the avian influenza virus to humans.
- Poultry and egg farmers are working very hard with CFIA, federal and provincial governments and agencies to contain and eradicate this outbreak.
- Continue to cook chicken thoroughly and keep your services clean, as you always have.
