Press Release: BC Poultry EOC Responds to Dual Emergencies in the Fraser Valley

BC’s poultry sector continues to navigate challenges as flooding has struck the Fraser Valley again, alongside an ongoing avian influenza outbreak. The BC Poultry Industry Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is actively coordinating with farmers, government, and other commodity leaders to support growers, animal welfare, and maintain a stable supply of poultry and eggs for British Columbians.

With farms impacted by flood evacuations and more severe weather forecast, the situation stresses the importance of protecting Fraser Valley farmland—often called BC’s breadbasket—and highlights the strength of Canada’s supply management system.

“This is a challenging time for BC’s poultry farmers, with flooding occurring in the midst of an active avian influenza outbreak,” says EOC Director Shawn Hall. “For those British Columbians who want to support local farmers, the best thing you can do is look for BC poultry and other products when you are buying groceries for you family table.”

As recovery efforts continue, attention is also turning to lessons learned and what must change to better safeguard farmland and food security in the future.
